Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends of our sport!
With great joy on behalf of the European Fencing Confederation and on my own behalf, I welcome all the participants of European Qualification Event.
Warm greetings are in particular to all the athletes and those who make this Tournament happen. Our partners and friends from the Royal Spanish Fencing Federation, officials, referees and volunteers, sponsors. And last but not least – the Spanish authorities, Madrid City Council, Madrid Regional Autonomy and the International Fencing Federation (the FIE).
We are truly touched and delighted by the fact that despite very challenging times we have the opportunity to meet in Madrid – at a venue which is so symbolic in relation to Olympics – to select those of you who will fence and fight for Olympic medals in Tokyo.
All this would hardly be possible without the enormous devotion of the people who have been working hard to stage the Event. I take the opportunity to specially thank the RFEE President José Luis Abajo for his personal commitment.
It is a special tournament in many terms as only the winners will qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
I wish an absolute and fair competition to all fencers and let the best win!
Stanislav POZDNYAKOV ,
President of the European Fencing Confederation
Dear fellow fencing friends,
It is an honor for me to welcome you to this great event that we carry out in Madrid together with the European Fencing Confederation: the European Olympic Qualification Tournament.
We have been working together for two years with all the institutions, to which we are deeply grateful, that have made the celebration of this prestigious tournament a reality: European Fencing Confederation, International Fencing Federation, Spanish National Sports Council, Madrid City Council, Community of Madrid, Spanish Olympic Committee.
All the effort that the sports world is making to have a memorable Olympic Games comes down to this event, the last opportunity where many athletes have pinned all their hopes of achieving the much-desired Olympic ticket.
With everyone’s help, we will make this day something very special where we will experience passion, tension, smiles, and tears, in short, all the emotions that our sport generates and make it so unique.
I want to express my sincere thanks to the President of the European Fencing Confederation, Mr. Stanislav Pozdnyakov, for the trust and support given to our organization.
With my best wishes to all the participants and looking forward to a great fencing performance for the fans.
José Luis Abajo
President of the Royal Spanish Fencing Federation
